HISTORY OF THE PRADO MUSEUM AND ITS BUILDINGS
PRADO NATIONAL MUSEUM
COORDINATION, PRODUCTION, ASSEMBLY AND GLOBAL MANAGEMENT
2021
The permanent exhibition History of the Prado Museum and Its Buildings, located in Rooms 100, 101 and 102 in the Villanueva Building, explores the museum's architectural and institutional evolution over more than two hundred years. Previously occupied by the Dauphin's Treasure collection, the rooms have been remodelled to offer visitors a narrative about the construction, extension and transformation of the building, as well as the exhibition installations and museum operations over time. The exhibition includes everyday objects used by workers, archive images, remodel designs and non-artistic assets related to the institution.
The itinerary is structured into several chronological sections, each with significant exhibits like Juan de Villanueva's original scale model, Jean Laurent's graphoscope, a cupboard containing restoration tools and chemicals, and Juan de Villanueva's original scale model for the Natural Sciences Cabinet, as well as models of subsequent extensions and remodels.
Ypunto carried out the civil works and coordinated the room tasks, ensuring the correct execution of all aspects of the project. The exhibition elements, designed by Gestión de Diseño, consisted in a family of metal structures lined with Krion used as mounts for sculptures, as surrounds for cases to exhibit documents or as containers for exhibition drawers. Ypunto also coordinated the production of the scale models, based on the documentation provided by the museum, that are displayed at different intervals along the exhibition itinerary. It also reviewed the conservation needs of the exhibits in order to design custom mounts that would guarantee their stability and preservation. In addition, it was responsible for framing the historical documents and conducting detailed tests for the facsimiles of originals to ensure their exact and faithful reproduction. This comprehensive approach ensured that all components, from the mounts to the layout of the scale models, were perfectly aligned with the project requirements.
