MOLINETE ROMAN FORUM MUSEUM

2020
The Molinete Romum Forum Museum, located inside the Molinete Archaeological Park in the old quarter of Cartagena, forms an integral part of the urban environment and the Cerro del Molinete Archaeological Site, one of the most imortant areas of ancient Roman Cartagena. The space was designed by Amann-Cánovas-Maruri and occupies the ground floors and basements of a health centre. Created specifically to preserve the discovered archaeological remains and physically reconstruct a large part of the Roman Curia, the museum seeks to connect the past with the present, serving as a gateway to the itinerary through the entire archaeological park.
Spread across three floors, the itinerary invites visitors to establish a unique connection with the Roman ruins discovered at El Molinete. The ground floor, accessed directly from the street outside, is given over to the reception, general services and an initial gallery that exhibits singular items in a space built with materials like sheet metal, resin and sisal hemp. The next floor, structured like a hanging balcony over the excavation level, allows visitors to observe the remains without any physical interference with them. This floor acts as a transitional itinerary, characterised by a neutral, welcoming atmosphere.

The excavation level forms the heart of the project. Here, a void of nearly eight metres highlights the spatial vestiges of the Roman Curia, with a suspended physical reconstruction that combines steel bars and transparent plastic.

Ypunto played a crucial role in the manufacture and supply of museographic elements and the provision of advice on the exhibition of the pieces. The display cases, designed specifically to meet conservation criteria and adapted to the conditions of the environment, include air conditioning systems to protect the metal pieces and restored frescoes, such as those of the muses. The manufacture of the containers in 10 mm rolled steel guarantees their durability in a region of high humidity. The entire project and the specific dimensions and characteristics of each piece were meticulously reviewed prior to the custom manufacture of all the mounts and their mechanised installation. The logistics surrounding the placement of the exhibits required extreme care and the use of major auxiliary resources, since many of them had to be moved directly from the archaeological site while the excavation works were still under way.
