The Casa del Lector ("Reading House"), inaugurated in 2012 by the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation, is a space dedicated to research, development and innovation in reading. It is located in pavilions 13, 14, 17b and 17c of the old slaughterhouse building in Madrid. The refurbishment programme designed by the architect Antón García-Abril of Ensamble Studio transformed the old warehouses into a contemporary cultural centre, respecting and highlighting their industrial essence. The intervention combines the interior metal structures and the original masonry facades with vast prefabricated concrete girders that divide the space into integrated corridors and rooms.
The furniture, designed by Jesús Moreno & Asociados, was conceived to maintain functional and aesthetic coherence with the architecture. Ypunto produced the key elements for the activities and exhibitions: folding metal display stands and bamboo tables, designed specifically to adapt to the diverse needs of a centre dedicated to the promotion of reading.
As a meeting and experimentation space, the Reading House offers a programme of workshops, exhibitions, lectures and activities for all types of audiences. Its integration into Matadero Madrid has made it a crucial part of the city's cultural ecosystem where people, ideas and spaces come together in a dynamic environment.
