2011
The Archaeological Museum of Córdoba, housed in the Renaissance palace of the Páez de Castillejo family, continues its ambitious general extension and remodel project with the inauguration of the extension building. Designed by Pau Soler Serratosa, the new space integrates the archaeological remains of the old Roman theatre into the basement level. As part of the exhibition itinerary, a walkway over the theatre structures offers visitors a unique experience and insight into the city's Roman past.
The semi-permanent exhibition, entitled Córdoba: A Meeting of Cultures, combines tradition and innovation in its design and execution. Conceived by Jesús Moreno y Asociados and executed by Ypunto, the museography incorporates modular display cases made in lacquered wood and adaptable anchoring systems, allowing the rotation of exhibits from the storeroom.
Ypunto played an important role at the archaeological site, integrating the Roman theatre ruins into the design of the building while respecting the structures and guaranteeing their long-term conservation. The natural lighting of the remains, achieved with strategic skylights and openings, was complemented with a light assembly created by the visual artist Pablo Valbuena that highlights the different archaeological strata, providing an innovative interpretive aid for the site.
The new building not only increases the museum's capacity but reinforces its mission of promoting a knowledge of Córdoba's heritage, seamlessly integrating contemporary architecture with historical remains and collections of artefacts dating from Prehistory to the Middle Ages.
