ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF ASTURIAS

2011
The museographic proposal for the Archaeological Museum of Asturias integrates a spatial and visual narrative that highlights the archaeological collections and the historical value of the old monastery of San Vicente. The design focuses on coherence and simplicity, respecting the monumental nature of the building while combining it with specific display cases, adapted structures and advanced lighting systems to preserve the exhibits and improve their visibility. Pure lines and modern materials like glass and metal cede the protagonism to the collections.
Organised chronologically, the itinerary commences in Prehistory and ends in the Middle Ages, employing display tables, pedestals, scale models and audiovisual productions to enable visitors to understand the historical context of the exhibits. Multimedia resources, interactives and replicas enrich the experience, making it accessible to all.

The remodel, undertaken by the architects Fernando Pardo Calvo and Bernardo García Tapia, combined the recovery of emblematic elements like the sixteenth-century Gothic cloister and the monumental staircase with an extension that respects the urban fabric and uses materials like alabaster and limestone, associated with the Asturian pre-Romanesque tradition.
The museographic project developed by Ypunto focused on the integration of the collections into the remodelled spaces, creating an area of more than 5,800 square metres that accommodates permanent and temporary exhibitions, an auditorium, classrooms and a restoration laboratory.
