GOYA'S CABINET

2024
Founded in 1752, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando houses the National Engraving Museum, which holds the largest collection of moulds and prints in Spanish graphic art, including the 228 plates engraved by Francisco de Goya.
In 2023 the Academy embarked on the extension and renovation of Goya's Cabinet in order to create a permanent exhibition of the complete series of the Aragonese master's engraving plates.

The Frade Arquitectos studio, renowned for its experience in museography and the refurbishment of historical heritage, was commissioned to design the intervention.

Frade achieved continuity with the 1990 design of the existing plate cabinet carried out by the architects Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá, renovating the lectern concept and maintaining the same proportions. They also implemented a lighting system that accentuates the plastic properties of the engravings, enhancing the beauty of Goya's plates.

Ypunto carried out the production and assembly of the project, guaranteeing the optimal conservation of the moulds at the appropriate relative humidity and temperature levels, and designed the mount systems for the exhibits. As well as providing solutions for all the construction details of the assembly, Ypunto ensured the correct installation of the double-sided works, therefore guaranteeing the correct sequencing of the exhibits.

This project has permitted the permanent exhibition, for the first time ever, of the complete series of Goya's plates, recently restored, offering visitors a unique opportunity to appreciate the artist's masterly command of the art of engraving.
