MADRID HISTORY MUSEUM

2014
The city's old hospice, a Baroque masterpiece designed by Pedro de Ribera, is nowadays home to the Madrid History Museum following refurbishment by Frade Arquitectos to address the needs of a contemporary museum, respecting the building's heritage values while introducing modern solutions to optimise its functionality.
The design reorganises the space across three floors that surround the old central courtyard, creating a coherent and accessible exhibition itinerary. The new technical installations are discreetly integrated into the ceilings, designed in harmony with the furniture through the use of oak and vertical grooved panels. The display cases, made with metal frameworks, are integrated into the layout with a sober design that reinforces the visual narrative without diminishing the protagonism of the exhibits.

The execution process involved a thorough review of the dimensions of all the exhibits and a detailed analysis of the entrances and corridors for the installation of the materials, especially the large-format pieces.

The highlights of the museum include an exceptional collection of antique fans that illustrates the predominant interests and tastes of Madrid society in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the biscuits from the Buen Retiro Royal Porcelain Factory and the drawings by Ventura Rodríguez. The specific mounts designed for their display guarantee both their optimal presentation and conservation, while existing frames were painstakingly adapted to display the graphic documents that form part of the museum's assets.
